Origin[]

Buster Brown, his sister Mary Jane, and his dog Tige were a wealthy city dwelling family at the turn of the century. He usually would state a moral at the end of the strip that would be completely unrelated to his actions.

Outcault left to go work for William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal and a subsequent court battle that resulted, both the Herald and the Journal were allowed to continue with a Buster Brown comic (though Buster remained nameless in the Journal's version).
  • The Herald's Buster Brown ended in 1911 while Outcault's version lasted longer at the Journal, ending in 1923.
  • Outcault's character the Yellow Kid would sometimes appear in Buster Brown strips.
